Shetland Lace, charactrized by eyelet patterns against a garter stitch background, is a centuries-old technique originating on an island off the northern coast of Scotland.  Historically, knitters used this technique to make gossamer-thin shawls that are treasured for their delicate beauty.  In this updated use of the technique, we're creating a lovely cowl.  In its single-wrapped version, the cowl adds a colorful accent to a cool weather wardrobe, and can also be pulled up over the head, scarf-style, to block the wind.  In the double-wrapped version, the cowl provides more snuggly warmth at the neck.

Measurements/Yarn Requirements:

Single Wrap (approximately 24" circumference):  250 yards of fingering weight yarn
Double Wrap (approximately 36" circumference):  375 yards of fingering weight yarn

Gauge: 19 sts = 4" in overall pattern stitch

Needles: Recommended size US 5
